In an interview with the German news agency dpa, the Director of the Institute of Virology at the University of Marburg, Professor Stefan H. E. Renz, warned of the new Covid variant.
The new variant is highly contagious
"The new variant is highly contagious and spreads easily from person to person," explains Renz.
Higher risk for certain groups
According to Renz, people with weakened immune systems, older people and those with pre-existing conditions are particularly at risk.
Vaccination is still the best protection
"Vaccination is still the best protection against Covid-19," emphasizes Renz.
He recommends getting vaccinated as soon as possible and also getting booster vaccinations.
New variant is more dangerous
Renz emphasizes that the new variant is more dangerous than previous variants.
"The risk of severe illness and death is significantly higher with this variant," he warns.
Follow the measures
Renz therefore advises continuing to adhere to the measures to prevent the spread of the virus.
This includes keeping a distance, wearing a mask and maintaining hygiene.
